What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is an allied health professional who is trained to assess, diagnose and treat foot and lower limb problems. These may include skin and nail problems, foot and ankle injuries, foot complications related to diabetes and other medical conditions and problems with gait or walking.

Podiatrists play an important role in monitoring disease and managing lower limb issues to maintain an active and mobile population across the lifespan. Therefore patient demographics can be diverse ranging from monitoring children’s growth and development, managing sports injuries, working with people with chronic disease, disability and the ageing population.

Examples of how our Podiatrist can help you

Mary, a 36-year-old mother of three has complained initially of chronic hip and knee pain from many years of carrying her young children. Her most recent complaint is the chronic foot pain which extends from her heel through to the balls of her feet. After consulting her General Practitioner a referral to Doveston Health to see the Podiatrist is made. During the initial assessment, Mary’s walking technique and patterns (gait) is analysed and the Podiatrist provides suitable taping and exercises to correct the lower limb mobility and function in order to normalise gait. If pain is recurring an orthotic may be recommend to correct leg length in discrepancy and evenly distribute weight whilst ambulating.
